Athens-Clarke County has announced changes to its services and facilities schedule in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday on January 20, 2025.

Animal Services will close its Adoption Center on Monday, January 20, and resume regular hours on Tuesday, January 21. Field Services will operate on an emergency on-call basis only during the holiday. Emergencies such as animal bites or trapped animals can be reported by calling 911.

Leisure Services facilities will also be closed on Monday, with parks operating under reduced hours from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, except for Sandy Creek Park which is closed every Monday. Regular operations for both facilities and parks will resume the following day.

The Solid Waste Department will not collect garbage and recycling outside the Downtown district on Monday. Instead, collection for regular Monday customers will occur on Tuesday, with subsequent collections pushed back a day throughout the week. Inside the Downtown district, collection will proceed as scheduled. The landfill and Solid Waste offices will close for the holiday but reopen Tuesday. The Materials Recycling Facility remains open on Monday.

Transit services are suspended for the holiday but return to normal operation on Tuesday.

Additionally, all general departmental administrative offices including City Hall and Courthouse will close in observance of MLK Day and reopen with regular hours on January 21.

For further information regarding specific departments' schedules or services during this period, residents are encouraged to contact respective departments through provided phone numbers or visit their websites.
