Athens-Clarke County Unified Government (ACCGov) Leisure Services Director Kent Kilpatrick has announced his retirement, effective April 1, 2025. Kilpatrick is stepping down after a 37-year career with the department, including seven years as director.

"Kent’s dedication to serving this community’s residents and visitors of all ages and abilities for nearly four decades is extraordinary," stated Acting Manager Niki Jones. "His leadership in directing such a community-based department in such professional, innovative ways will be missed."

Kilpatrick began his tenure with the local government in 1987 as Outdoor Recreation Manager for the former Clarke County Parks Department. Following the unification of Athens and Clarke County in 1991, he continued his service with what became the Athens-Clarke County Arts and Environmental Education Department.

The ACCGov Leisure Services Department was established in 1996 from previous departments. Kilpatrick served as Internal Services Administrator and Interim Director before being appointed Director in 2017.

Reflecting on his career, Kilpatrick said, "Since arriving in Athens in 1987, it has been an honor to serve this community and leave a legacy of parks, programs, and memories that will benefit generations to come."

In recognition of his contributions, Kilpatrick received the Georgia Recreation and Park Association’s Ray Hammond Leadership Award in 2021.

During his time as director, Kilpatrick's achievements included earning numerous awards for events and facilities; leading redevelopment projects like Firefly Bridge over Trail Creek; creating Teen Tech Labs; introducing virtual programs during the pandemic; expanding trail systems; launching new community events; opening inclusive playgrounds; initiating mobile recreation programs; partnering to build pickleball courts; and starting a comprehensive department Master Plan.

A national search will be conducted to appoint a permanent successor for Kilpatrick's position.
