COBB SCHOOLS: Compton Elementary: The Newest Library Learning Commons Certified School!

Award

Cobb Schools issued the following announcement on Apr. 14.

The path to library learning commons certification takes vision, skill, and time. Years of work are put into transforming a school media center into a library learning commons, where instructional collaboration and student engagement are at the core.

It takes energy, passion, and a desire to make a student-friendly space that fosters a love of reading and emphasizes the importance of digital literacy. Countless hours must be spent in reflection and improvement. In addition to transforming the look and feel of the space itself, a comprehensive portfolio must be submitted highlighting the program’s contributions to student success.

As part of the rigorous certification process, Kris Cable, Compton’s Media Specialist, hosted a visit of the Library Learning Commons Advisory Board.

Some of the praise Compton received following the visit include:

“It was inspirational to see the collaboration between the school’s leadership and [Kris Cable]. The teamwork was evident, resulting in a positive vision for the students, staff, and stakeholders.”

“I like the emphasis on the instructional partnerships. This collaborative relationship was apparent in the teachers that spoke during the visit. The robust support from administration is clearly evident.”

Compton’s media specialist also earned accolades for writing grants to supplement the gaps in technology. The school visitors were impressed by the school’s green screens, robots, and video broadcasting. They noted that Compton was “lucky to have a media specialist that is an innovator and teaches 21st Century technology skills to even the youngest students.”

Compton is one of 15 schools in Cobb County to earn this prestigious certification, which will benefit Compton students for years to come.
