West Jackson teacher honored with Robert E. Yager award for excellence in science education

Dr. Stephanie Westhafer, a first-grade teacher at West Jackson Elementary School, has been honored with the Robert E. Yager Excellence in Teaching Award by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). The prestigious award recognizes educators who demonstrate exceptional innovation in science education.

As part of her recognition, Westhafer has received a monetary prize and travel expenses to attend the NSTA Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this week. Westhafer's contributions to science education have garnered multiple accolades over the years. In June 2023, she was appointed by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp to the Georgia Council on Literacy. Additionally, she was named to the Georgia Science Teachers Association Board in April of the same year.

Westhafer's previous recognitions include being named the Georgia Youth Science and Technology Center's STEM Scholar in 2022 and the Jackson County School System Teacher of the Year in 2023. Her dedication to both science and reading education continues to be acknowledged at various levels of her educational journey.
