The Athens YMCA is set to celebrate its 168th anniversary on March 26, 2025, with the announcement of a $9.3 million capital campaign aimed at enhancing its facilities and programs to meet the community's changing needs. The organization has already secured $4.6 million towards this goal.

Shae Wilson, CEO of the Athens YMCA, emphasized the importance of their role in the community: “We like to say that we are not a gym—we are a GEM. YMCAs are not just gyms or pools—they are lifelines for communities,” said Wilson. She added that they offer hope and support under one roof and now seek the community's help for future development.

The campaign, titled "Building A Stronger Community," plans to renovate and expand several areas within the YMCA. This includes creating the Cobern Kelley Youth Wing, named after a significant leader at Athens Y. The new wing will feature multipurpose rooms, a computer lab, STEAM spaces, and a youth area dedicated to personal development. Additional improvements include wellness rooms for seniors, inclusive areas for special needs individuals, an expanded Child Watch Center, training rooms, an enhanced wellness center, and improved fitness spaces.

Grant Tribble, Chair of the Athens YMCA board, remarked on their historical significance: "The Y is an important part of the history of Athens...This campaign is an opportunity for our members and the community to build on those years of service." He expressed excitement about future plans and gratitude for existing support.

Founded in 1857 as a men's Bible study at the University of Georgia campus, the Athens YMCA has maintained leadership stability with only five CEOs over its history. Its first CEO was Walter T. Forbes who also served as UGA's first men’s basketball coach. The YMCA has been located in various sites throughout its history before settling into its current facility.

“Our history and tradition are the foundation for a bold and beautiful future,” stated Wilson regarding their ongoing commitment to serving Athens.
