Following East Jackson's recent victory over Social Circle, Wesley Wheeler expressed his joy not only for the team's success but also for the opportunity to reunite with his family postgame. After the win, Wheeler's wife and two young children awaited him on the sidelines for their customary hugs.
Reflecting on these moments, Wheeler said, “So, it was always my mom, and then I met my wife. I always thought it was great to see my mom because I am a momma’s boy. Make no mistake. But then to see my wife (Ashley) was great. But there is nothing better. It makes a win that much better and a loss okay when they come running out.”
Wheeler admires college coaches who balance coaching with family time. “I am not a Clemson fan, but I admire Dabo Swinney through and through," he stated. "It goes to how he believes in coaching kids to also believing in having a family."
Balancing his roles as teacher and coach requires intentionality from Wheeler, especially regarding family time. His teaching career began after brief experiences in car sales and landscaping. Now in his 18th year of teaching, Wheeler works at East Jackson Comprehensive High School after spending a decade at East Jackson Middle School.
Wheeler is certified in various subjects including physical education at the secondary level. He explained his path into education by saying, “I got into teaching to coach football... And then I wound up loving teaching through coaching.”
His passion for education runs in the family; both of his parents were educators, as are his sisters and wife. “I hit the wife lottery,” Wheeler remarked about his supportive spouse.
In September 2022, Wheeler was named Teacher of the Year at East Jackson Comprehensive High School by his peers. Although honored, he prefers highlighting other educators' contributions: “There are just so many great teachers inside this building that I know are absolutely phenomenal.”
Known throughout the school for his enthusiasm, Wheeler engages with students and staff alike through activities like rapid-fire question videos with head football coach Cameron Pettus.
Raised in Nicholson and an alumnus of Jackson County Comprehensive High School where he played football before earning a scholarship to Elon University, Wheeler has been inducted into the JCHS Athletic Hall of Fame.
Currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership at Valdosta State University, Wheeler aims to become an athletic director while remaining committed to being an impactful teacher and coach.
