Students in the United States typically start learning foreign languages in middle or high school. However, Monica Eaton has taken a step to change this trend by introducing a Spanish curriculum for K-5 students at West Jackson Elementary School within the Jackson County School System (JCSS). This initiative makes West Jackson Elementary the first in JCSS to offer such a program.

Eaton, originally from Colombia, South America, crafted this curriculum nearly six years ago. Her background and experience growing up in Colombia have given her a deep appreciation for educational systems in the U.S. "I was fortunate enough to attend a private school during my time in Colombia. When it came time to pursue a career, I worked as a speech therapist there for ten years before moving here," said Eaton. She noted the differences between Colombia and the U.S., mentioning that many schools in Colombia lacked air conditioning due to its warm climate and economic challenges.

After earning her Masters in Scientific Studies from Colombia and moving to the United States with her husband, who served in the U.S. Military until retirement, Eaton joined the educational field while raising their three sons. She began working as a paraprofessional with JCSS and assisted with bilingual evaluations for speech therapists.

Lori King, Principal of West Jackson Elementary School, praised Eaton's work: "It is a joy to watch Ms. Eaton and her students in action. She has thoughtfully crafted each lesson and incorporates singing, dancing, videos, visuals, and of course lots of Spanish language."

Eaton also shared insights into her teaching approach: "How can I be engaging? How can I help them learn pronunciation?" Her efforts are part of an initiative driven by Dr. Amity Hardegree due to population growth requiring new specials like foreign language classes.

The Jackson County School System is one of Georgia's fastest-growing school systems. As it expands, JCSS continues to welcome new academic opportunities for students. Eaton aims to equip students with foreign language skills essential for adapting to a globalized world. "There is proof that when you teach children from an early age, they learn better and their academic abilities increase as well," she said.

Her commitment extends beyond language instruction; she also emphasizes cultural education: "I'm not only teaching them Spanish but also the culture of the Latin people and teaching how to live with diversity." The first kindergarten class taught by Eaton will advance to sixth grade after this academic year.
