The Jackson County School System has witnessed the end of what many refer to as the "Gaultney Era." The Gaultney family, having moved to Jackson County in 2004, has had at least one child enrolled in the school system for nearly two decades. This chapter closed with Mark Gaultney's graduation from East Jackson Comprehensive High School in May.
Anna, Sam, and Eli Gaultney recently reflected on their experiences growing up together. Anna noted the lively household atmosphere, stating, “Honestly, I love it. I grew up in a busy house. There was always things to do.” Despite sibling dynamics that sometimes involved teasing, she emphasized the protective nature of her brothers as they matured.
Eli and Sam shared their perspectives on family life. Eli mentioned his hands-off approach while Sam humorously recalled sibling interactions: “I’m not sure we ever beat Anna up,” he said with a laugh.
Sam highlighted the expectations set by following an academically gifted older brother like Eli: “I was always Eli’s brother... He was academically very gifted.”
The siblings also discussed their involvement in music and performing arts during high school. Sam remarked on how these activities provided social interaction: “The fine arts provided that avenue of social interaction that I don’t think you can get otherwise.”
Each sibling graduated from different schools within the county due to changes over time. Eli graduated from Jackson County High School while his younger siblings attended East Jackson Comprehensive High School.
As Mark graduates and their mother begins teaching at EJCHS without any children left in the system, Anna described this transition as bittersweet: “For sure, it is bittersweet... My parents are empty nesters now.”
Reflecting on their educational journey within JCSS, all Gaultney children expressed fond memories of their time there.
“I have very fond memories of my time at East Jackson,” Anna concluded.
