Twenty-three-year-old pilot Hayden Dutton has been flying planes since he was sixteen. Now, as a professional pilot for Southwest Airlines, he often finds himself at 40,000 feet, enjoying the views from his Seven Thirty-Seven.
Dutton's passion for aviation began in high school and was influenced by his father, who was also a pilot. "It's enjoyable, I get to see new places and hang out with interesting people," said Dutton, who graduated as valedictorian of Jackson County High School in 2018.
Among his memorable flights are those where he flew Chris Stapleton and his wife to San Jose and The Who to Canada. He cherishes the interactions that come with his job, such as when a young boy asked for a photo with him in the cockpit.
From an early age, Dutton was surrounded by aviation influences. His two younger sisters, Katelyn and Gracen, have been supportive companions throughout his journey. In high school, Dutton juggled AP classes, tennis, and club activities while working towards his private pilot's license.
Reflecting on his time at Jackson County High School (JCHS), Dutton recalls significant moments like winning the tennis regional championship during his senior year. "All of my teachers at JCHS were caring," he said. "They showed me that you get what you work for."
After high school graduation, Dutton attended the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia and completed his degree swiftly due to prior credits. With determination and ambition to fly commercial airlines, he gained necessary qualifications promptly after college.
Before joining Southwest Airlines as a captain at twenty-three, Dutton served in the same capacity for another airline. Each flight preparation reminds him of how far he's come since starting this journey.
Offering advice to current students, Dutton stated: "Enjoy yourself; life is short. We all have a different journey and path in this life; make the best of the life that you are given."
Dutton's story exemplifies how dedication can lead to achieving one's dreams.
