The Athens-Clarke County Unified Government (ACCGov) is working with an engineering consultant to research and assess internet service throughout the community. The assessment is part of the SPLOST 2020 Project 22 Broadband Connectivity Enhancement Project that is designed to assist with the process of implementing and providing for the enhancement of broadband connectivity throughout Athens-Clarke County.
Part of the research includes a public connectivity and broadband survey available through www.accgov.com/speedtest. Residents are encouraged to take the survey, which is currently live and runs through September 30, at their homes. The survey will help gather information around Athens-Clarke County about technology needs, costs related to existing and future Internet services, resident satisfaction with services, and lack of internet options. If a resident is connected to the internet through a broadband connection, the survey will also perform a speed test of their existing connection. The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
Residents who currently have internet service at their home address should use their primary home wired or wireless internet connection. If taking the survey from a mobile phone, residents should connect to a home Wi-Fi, if available. A speed test will be available at the end of the survey to provide current internet speed as part of the research for understanding current internet access in the community.
Residents who do not currently have internet access at their home address are encouraged to still take the survey from a mobile phone or at another location, but will not be asked to complete a speed test.
The goal of the SPLOST project is to begin a process to provide all residents with access to broadband Internet services. Feedback from the survey will help understand the current internet access in the community. Information about existing conditions and future opportunities will allow for better partnership opportunities with internet providers to expand or increase services, allowing ACCGov opportunities to leverage needs with broader impact.
Results of the survey will be part of the SPLOST 2020 Project 22 project concept that is tentatively scheduled for discussion by the Mayor and Commission in the November Agenda Setting Session / December Regular Session agenda cycle. Additional community engagement sessions are being planned for September.
