County of Oconee issued the following announcement on Oct. 20.

The Oconee County Water Resources Department recently earned the 2021 Georgia Association of Water Professionals (GAWP) Gold Distribution System Excellence Award for its water system. This is the second GAWP Award the department has won this year; the previously announced Gold Collection System Distribution Award was granted in recognition of excellence of Oconee County’s sewer system.

The Distribution System Excellence Award recognizes outstanding performance in Management, Operations & Maintenance, Program Management, and Planning. Oconee County Water Resources earned the award following an extensive audit in the areas of maps and records, metering, field sampling, system design and material standards, maintenance procedures, disinfection procedures, cross-connection control, water loss, finished water storage, pumping facilities, regulatory review, records retention, water quality monitoring plans and facilities, administrative procedures/polices, master planning, funding, communications, and staffing.

“This was our first year to compete for this award as we have been working the last three years to put programs in place,” said Water Resources Director Tim Durham. “Staff worked diligently to achieve this milestone, and it took years of consistent work.”

“Our staff has already identified even more ways to improve our programs so that we have continued success,” continued Durham. “We have a good team, and I think achieving this award demonstrates that.”
