Chronic absenteeism continues to be significant in Georgia schools since the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing 10% or more school days in 2024, reports the Georgia Department of Education. In response, statewide initiatives have been launched, including a real-time attendance dashboard, new public awareness campaigns, and targeted resources for districts identified as high-need in order to increase daily attendance rates.
In 2025, new legislation passed by Georgia lawmakers updated school attendance requirements, prohibiting expulsion based only on absenteeism. Additional reporting standards and more pathways for students to receive diplomas were also introduced in the law.
As of 2026, Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio was about 14:1. That compares favorably to the national average of 15:1.
