Westside Middle School enrolled 47 multiracial students for 2024-25

There were 47 multiracial students enrolled at Westside Middle School in the 2024-25 school year, marking an 11.3% decline compared to the prior year, Georgia Department of Education data shows.

The total student population at Westside Middle School reached 797 in the 2024-25 school year. Multiracial students comprised 6% of the students, the second-smallest racial or ethnic group represented.

Westside Middle School operates within Barrow County School District, whose central office is located in Winder.

Within Barrow County School District’s 16 schools, Apalachee High School enrolled the largest number of multiracial students in 2024-25, with 95 reported.

The National Center for Education Statistics notes Georgia’s public school student demographics as about 36.4% Black, 35.9% white, 18.1% Hispanic, 4% Asian, 4.6% multiracial, 0.2% American Indian or Alaska Native and 0.1% Pacific Islander.

Chronic absenteeism continues to be a significant issue in Georgia, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. In response, the Department launched a statewide initiative featuring an attendance dashboard, public awareness efforts, and specific support for high-need districts.

As of 2025, a bill passed by Georgia lawmakers modified attendance rules, preventing expulsion solely for absenteeism, introducing new reporting obligations and connecting with programs that offer alternatives for earning a diploma.

By 2026, Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio was about 14:1, which is lower than the national figure of 15:1.
