Third Thursday Returns to The Classic Center

0Comments

Third Thursday is a collective effort of local organizations around Athens to make art accessible to the public while highlighting and encouraging local talent.

This month’s event will unveil two new art galleries at The Classic Center on Thursday, August 18 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. featuring a special book signing from local authors from Athens and around Georgia. The featured authors are Kelly Codling, Chenoa Daniels, Dr. Naeema Olatunji, Gwendolyn Stokes, and Joycelyn Wells.

Classic Gallery I: “Spotlight: Paintings by Amy Watts” features cowgirls, farmers, miners, indigenous peoples and angels comingling on big, bold, colorful canvases that bring to mind stained glass windows and Work Place Administration murals.

Classic Gallery II: “Light Bright” this exhibition is inspired by our childhood toy, Light Brite. Remember piercing through the board with little, colorful, plastic pegs to create glowing compositions? Artists Caitlin Gal, Allison McPheeters, and Alivia Patton all utilize circles in their artwork to create inspiring pieces. Caitlin Gal’s paintings joyfully point to plant life and biology using a bright color palette and Matisse inspired shapes. Allison McPheeters uses drawing as a means to relax and her intricate repeated mark reads as a sort of meditation. Alivia Patton shows the transformation of form in her works that resemble a target, a planet, or an eyeball.

Reservations for Third Thursday on August 18 are not required; guests are encouraged to drop by The Classic Center from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to enjoy the work of these local artists and authors. Visit ClassicCenter.com/ClassicGalleries for more information.
