Renewal applications for the 2025 business occupation tax in Athens-Clarke County are due by April 1, 2025. Late submissions will incur a 10% penalty. New businesses, including those based at home, must complete a business occupation tax application before starting operations.
Businesses that received a 2024 business occupation tax certificate were sent renewal information and a 2025 application last December. The Business Tax/Revenue Section of the ACCGov Finance Department's Financial Services Division manages the issuance of these certificates and other permits for businesses within Athens-Clarke County.
The certificates, often called "business licenses," are not technically licenses since the Finance Department cannot issue licenses to operate a business. Around 5,000 businesses are registered with Athens-Clarke County, with taxes assessed and collected annually.
