The Athens Georgia Initiative for Community Housing (GICH) Committee has reported a notable interest from various parties in submitting development proposals to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA). These proposals aim to secure funding through the Federal Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) Program. The DCA evaluates applications using a competitive, point-based scoring system. Although the criteria and final decision on funding are determined by the state, the Athens GICH Committee plays a significant role in providing input.

The Athens GICH Committee, with consent from the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission, may choose to support one project within Athens-Clarke County in 2025 by forwarding a letter of endorsement. This letter grants an additional point to the submission as part of the criteria. The committee has outlined specific criteria and a timeline for applicants seeking this "GICH Point."
