The Athens-Clarke County Unified Government (ACCGov) and the Athens Downtown Development Authority (ADDA) are seeking public input on a redevelopment plan for College Square Plaza in downtown Athens. Residents have the opportunity to participate in two open house sessions scheduled for December, where they can learn about proposed improvements and provide feedback.

The sessions will take place at the Dougherty Street Government Building Auditorium, located at 120 W. Dougherty Street. The first session is set for Monday, December 9, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM, and the second on Tuesday, December 17, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

In addition to attending these sessions, residents can submit comments through an online form available at www.accgov.com/collegesquare until January 3, 2025. This webpage also offers additional project details, including a presentation recording from the September Mayor and Commission Work Session and a design framework document.

Funding for this project includes $500,000 allocated from TSPLOST 2023. Proposed enhancements may involve improved paving, accessibility upgrades, better seating arrangements, lighting enhancements, pavement changes, and stormwater management improvements. Most of the project's funding will be sourced through ADDA via financing options such as parking revenue.

According to current plans—subject to change—the schematic design is expected to receive approval by spring 2025. Construction could begin in fall 2025 with completion anticipated by fall 2026.

For further information or inquiries about the project, contact the Capital Projects Department at 706-613-3025 or via email at splost@accgov.com. Additional details are available on their website at www.accgov.com/collegesquare.
