The Leisure Services Department has officially renamed Rocksprings Park and Community Center to Christine W. Howard Park and Community Center in a recent ceremony. The renaming honors Mrs. Christine W. Howard, who served the community for decades.
Mrs. Howard, originally from Athens, began her association with the center in the early 1960s as a volunteer before becoming an employee. Her efforts focused on fostering community involvement, education, and sports until she retired in 1999. During her tenure, she mentored thousands of young people participating in various center activities.
She was also dedicated to supporting senior citizens by offering programs that kept them active and engaged.
In 2023, the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission approved the name change to honor Mrs. Howard's contributions.
