The Athens-Clarke County government has announced schedule and service changes for Indigenous Peoples' Day on Monday, October 14. The adjustments affect various departments, including Animal Services, Leisure Services, Solid Waste, and Transit.

Animal Services will see the Animal Shelter closed on October 14, resuming regular operations on October 15 for fosters, adoptions, and rescues. Animal Control Officers will not handle non-emergency calls during the holiday but will respond to emergencies such as animal bites or seriously sick or injured animals by calling 911.

Leisure Services facilities have adjusted hours. Parks will be open from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM on October 14, though Sandy Creek Park remains closed as it is every Monday. Other department facilities like Sandy Creek Nature Center and Lyndon House Arts Center will also be closed.

Solid Waste services face a one-day delay in residential garbage and recycling collection. Downtown district commercial and residential curbside services continue as scheduled. However, other commercial curbside services are delayed by one day. The Materials Recycling Facility stays open on its usual schedule from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, while the landfill is closed for the day.

Transit services maintain their regular schedule despite office closures on October 14.

All general departmental administrative offices such as City Hall and the Courthouse will be closed for Indigenous Peoples' Day with normal hours resuming on October 15.

For more information about specific services or further inquiries, residents can contact respective departments via phone numbers provided in their announcements or visit the official Athens-Clarke County website.
