Jonathan "Buck" Sims, a Collection Division Driver III with the Athens-Clarke County (ACC) Solid Waste Department, has been recognized as the Solid Waste Worker of the Year. The accolade was awarded at the joint Georgia SWANA/Georgia Recycling Coalition Conference held on September 18, 2024, in Jekyll Island, Georgia.

Sims has been part of the ACC Solid Waste Department for over 22 years. His career is marked by dedication and leadership. He operates all Collection Division trucks and equipment and mentors new drivers, significantly impacting operations.

His commitment extends beyond regular duties; he logged 935.50 overtime hours from August 2023 to August 2024 to ensure high-quality community services. Sims's teamwork and communication skills contribute to his unit's success in maintaining recycling drop-off sites and managing commercial trash and recycling services.

Sims also contributes to community spirit by organizing events like Solid Waste picnics, where he cooks for colleagues even on his birthday.

The award acknowledges Sims's contributions and commitment to excellence within the department. "We are incredibly proud of his achievements," said a spokesperson for the ACC Solid Waste Department.
