Athens-Clarke County Unified Government (ACCGov) staff are closely monitoring Hurricane Helene as it approaches, coordinating response efforts across multiple departments including Police, Fire, Transportation and Public Works, Central Services, Leisure Services, Public Utilities, Transit, Human Resources, Communications departments, the Manager’s Office, and other local, state, and federal agencies.

The storm's potential impact on Athens-Clarke County remains uncertain. However, heavy rain and strong winds are expected to cause flooding, downed trees and power lines, and power outages. Preparations are underway to ensure government resources are ready to respond.

A webpage at www.accgov.com/helene has been created by ACCGov for updated information about the hurricane's effects on Athens-Clarke County. Updates will also be posted on ACCGov’s social media channels on Facebook and Twitter.

Residents are encouraged to prepare for potential emergency situations before Hurricane Helene's direct effects begin on Thursday. The Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) recommends creating a family communications plan in case members are in different areas during an emergency. They also suggest preparing a ready kit with supplies for three days and staying informed about severe weather situations.

GEMA suggests including the following items in a ready kit:

- Water: One gallon per person per day for at least three days.

- Food: At least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.

- Can opener for canned food.

- Battery-powered or hand crank radio with NOAA Weather Radio and extra batteries.

- Emergency charger for mobile devices.

- Flashlight with extra batteries.

- First aid kit.

- Whistle to signal for help.

- Face mask to filter contaminated air; plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter in place.

- Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal hygiene.

- Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities.

- Local maps.

Additional recommended items include prescription medications and glasses; infant formula and diapers; pet food; important family documents; cash or traveler’s checks; emergency reference materials; sleeping bags or warm blankets; clothing including long-sleeved shirts and sturdy shoes; household chlorine bleach with medicine dropper; fire extinguisher; matches in a waterproof container; feminine supplies; mess kits with paper cups/plates/utensils/paper towels; paper/pencil; books/games/puzzles for children.

Earlier this year, ACCGov provided contact information for common issues resulting from severe weather or urgent situations in the 2024 edition of the ACC From A to Z booklet. This document is also available online at www.accgov.com/helene.
