The Capital Projects Department is seeking public input on potential improvement projects for the Lexington Road corridor through August 11, 2024. The initiative aims to enhance connectivity and pedestrian access along the corridor, funded by $8 million from the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST) 2023 voter-approved program under Project #2 - Lexington Road Corridor Improvements.

Details on possible projects, reference material, maps, and a public input survey are available on the project webpage at www.accgov.com/lexingtonroad. The survey will remain open until August 11. Residents can also sign up for email and text notifications to stay informed about key dates and additional input opportunities.

An open house session is scheduled for Thursday, August 1 at the Police Department East Precinct (3035 Lexington Road) from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Attendees can ask questions of Capital Projects staff and provide input on proposed projects.

Projects under consideration include pedestrian crossings near the Jail, the Diversion Center, Hughes Drive, and Cooper Road; shared-use paths connecting Lexington Road to the Firefly Trail, Cherokee Road, and Satterfield Park; a signalized intersection at Southeast Clarke Park; and sidewalk gap completions.

This effort continues from TSPLOST 2018 Project 14: Lexington Highway Corridor Improvements. Public engagement sessions held in 2020, 2021, and 2022 helped identify and prioritize potential improvements with input from the project user group.

The segment of the Lexington Road corridor being considered spans 3.25 miles between Johnson Road east of Loop 10 and Southeast Clarke Park. TSPLOST improvements do not include ongoing work at the Loop 10 / Lexington Road / Barnett Shoals intersection, which is managed by the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The Mayor and Commission are tentatively scheduled to vote on a final list of project concepts during their September 3, 2024 Regular Session voting meeting.
