Athens-Clarke County businesses are reminded that the deadline for renewal applications for the 2024 business occupation tax is fast approaching. As stated by the authority, "Renewal applications for the 2024 business occupation tax for Athens-Clarke County businesses are due by Monday, April 1, 2024." Those who miss this deadline will face consequences, as highlighted by the statement, "Certificates submitted after April 1 are assessed a 10% penalty."
New businesses are also urged to take note of the requirements, with the reminder that "New businesses, including home-based businesses, are required to fill out a business occupation tax application at any time throughout the year before beginning their operations."
Existing businesses that were issued a 2023 business occupation tax certificate have already been informed about the renewal process. According to the announcement, "All businesses that were issued a 2023 business occupation tax certificate were mailed renewal information and a 2024 application in December."
The responsibility for managing business occupation tax certificates and other related permits falls under the Business Tax/Revenue Section of the Finance Department's Financial Services Division. The article clarifies that, "The Business Tax/Revenue Section of the Finance Department's Financial Services Division is responsible for the issuing of business occupation tax certificates and several special sales or regulatory permits for all businesses located within Athens-Clarke County."
It is essential for businesses to understand that, despite common terminology, business occupation tax certificates are not licenses. The Finance Department cannot issue licenses to operate a business. Currently, around 5,000 businesses are registered with Athens-Clarke County, and their taxes are assessed and collected annually.
