The Athens-Clarke County Unified Government (ACCGov) is seeking public input on the revised site selection criteria for a new Fire Station #5. The current fire station, built in 1974, is set to be relocated as part of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) 2020 Project 6.

According to ACCGov, the site selection criteria play a crucial role in evaluating potential locations for the new fire station. Criteria such as acreage, connection to utilities, street type, and visibility are among the factors being considered. Residents are encouraged to participate in the decision-making process by providing feedback on the criteria.

"A drop-in public meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 28 for residents to learn more about the project and provide feedback," stated the announcement. The meeting will be held at Fire Station #7 on South Barnett Shoals Road from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Additionally, public input can be submitted through an online survey available on the ACCGov website until Sunday, April 7.

The project, funded with approximately $6 million through SPLOST funds, includes aspects such as land acquisition, design, construction, and station equipment. The new station is intended to meet suburban design standards and provide essential services to the community.

Residents had previously offered feedback on initial site selection criteria, leading to a reevaluation by the Site Selection Committee. After the public feedback period on the revised criteria ends, recommended criteria will be presented to the Mayor and Commission for approval, initiating the site evaluation process.

Further opportunities for public input are expected as the project progresses through various phases of site selection and design. For those seeking more information or wishing to get involved, the SPLOST / TSPLOST Program Management Office can be contacted at 706-613-3025 or splost@accgov.com, or by visiting the ACCGov website.

The community's engagement in this process is vital to ensuring that the new Fire Station #5 meets the needs and expectations of Athens-Clarke County residents.
