On Friday, March 1st, 2024, at 6:05 a.m., Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services swiftly responded to a reported structure fire at The Globe, situated at 199 N. Lumpkin Street. Upon arrival, fire crews observed smoke emanating from the side door on Clayton Street. They promptly forced entry into The Globe and pinpointed the fire in the basement of the building. The firefighters acted swiftly to extinguish the fire and commenced inspecting for fire extension while ventilating the premises.

The activation of the building's sprinkler system played a crucial role in containing the fire within the basement. Fire Chief Nate Moss emphasized the significance of this safety feature, stating, "Without this critical safety measure in place, damage to the property could have been significantly worse." Moss further highlighted the importance of regular inspection and maintenance of commercial sprinkler systems to prevent such incidents.

Fortunately, there were no victims or injuries reported as a result of the fire. The cause and origin of the fire at The Globe are currently under investigation, with authorities working to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.
