The Athens-Clarke County Unified Government (ACCGov) invites residents to provide input on potential bike and pedestrian facility infrastructure improvements on sections of Mitchell Bridge Road and Timothy Road as part of the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST) 2018 Project 15 - Atlanta Highway Corridor Improvements.
An online story map of project concepts and survey for public feedback will be available from Monday, August 22 through Sunday, September 18 at www.accgov.com/atlantahighway. Multi-use paths, pedestrian sidewalks, and improvements to the bridge over the State Route Loop 10 on Mitchell Bridge Road are all being considered to provide enhanced access and connectivity to Atlanta Highway.
Public input will also be accepted in person at drop-in meetings on Tuesday, August 23 and Thursday, September 1 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens located at 780 Timothy Road. The meetings will provide residents with an opportunity to learn more and comment on the proposed multi-use paths, sidewalk extensions, and bridge enhancements.
Approximately $2.38 million has been set aside for possible improvements on Mitchell Bridge Road and Timothy Road out of the larger $4 million TSPLOST Project #15 budget. After public engagement and recommendations from the project user group, the Mayor and Commission is currently scheduled to consider which improvements to move into a design phase at their October 18 Agenda Setting Session and November 1 Regular Session voting meeting cycle.
The Atlanta Highway Corridor Improvements Project seeks to improve traffic flow, pedestrian access, and bicycle facilities along the corridor. The project webpage at www.accgov.com/atlantahighway includes details on past corridor studies, reference materials, video recordings of presentations to the Mayor and Commission, and previous public engagement efforts. Residents can also sign up for email and text notifications in order to receive information about key future dates and opportunities for additional input.
The Mayor and Commission approved priority projects along Mitchell Bridge Road and Timothy Road as part of the Atlanta Highway corridor on September 7, 2021. Additional projects for future consideration for the corridor include bus stop additions / improvements on Transit routes 6, 20 and 21; intersection improvements; landscaping improvements; bicycle and pedestrian improvements; land adjustments and restrictions such as medians; and new roadway and roadway expansions such as Loop 10 bypass flyovers.
