Northeast Georgia Health System issued the following announcement on Oct. 6.

Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Gainesville is the only hospital north of Metro Atlanta to be certified as a Comprehensive Stroke Center – the highest level of certification awarded to hospitals for stroke treatment.

“Receiving Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification proves that we have the infrastructure, staffing and resources needed to treat even the most serious stroke events right here in Gainesville without needing to transfer patients to Atlanta,” said Dr. Sung Lee, NGMC’s medical director of Neurointerventional Surgery. “This certification comes after months of preparation and growing our program, and I’m excited for what this means for our patients and community.”

Following a successful survey in September 2021, NGMC Gainesville is now the second hospital in the state to receive this certification from DNV Healthcare (DNV), NGMC’s accrediting agency. Surveyors review quality outcomes and clinical capabilities, among other measures, to award certification.

“NGMC Gainesville receiving Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification is a huge milestone for our health system and community, proving that exceptional teamwork and expertise lives within our walls,” said Carol Burrell, president and CEO of NGHS. “I am so proud of our Neurosciences team and their leaders for their commitment to holding themselves to a higher standard and providing the highest level of stroke care for patients across the region.”

In addition to this certification for NGMC Gainesville, NGMC Braselton and NGMC Barrow have been recertified as Primary Stroke Centers by DNV after receiving initial certification in 2020.

“These certifications further demonstrate NGMC’s commitment to creating a stroke system of care across our campuses,” said Meghan Glabach, executive director of Neurosciences at Northeast Georgia Health System. “Now, we can better serve the needs of our stroke patients no matter which location they visit to seek treatment.”
