Athens Area Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Sept. 21.
Women United is giving $10,000 to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library programs in Clarke and Oconee counties, raised during its Power of the Purse event this year. On Sept. 9, 2021, the group hosted its 18th annual Power of the Purse event virtually that benefitted these early childhood literacy programs. Previously run out of United Way of Northeast Georgia for the last nine years, these Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library programs are moving to county-specific organizational homes by the end of 2021.
Power of the Purse is an opportunity for local women philanthropists to gather in support of the community with a focus this year on early childhood literacy. This year featured Maria Balais, an author and consultant; Books for Keeps and Oconee Area Resource Council, the new organizational homes of the programs, respectively; a parent of children who have received Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library books; and Women United members. In addition to the virtual event, there was an online auction featuring designer purses, handmade jewelry, and specialty baskets. United Way of Northeast Georgia and Women United are grateful to the donors, attendees, auction participants, and business sponsors of Power of the Purse.
