Athens Area Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Sept. 20.

The Classic Center would like to congratulate Jill Biskin, the artist behind our one-of-a-kind theatre murals, on winning the Philip Shutze Award. This award comes from the Southeast Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art. This national organization, headquartered in New York City, New York, has been giving out the Philip Shutze award for 15 years. This year, Jill was selected for an award in the Artisanship-Craftsmanship category. The jury was comprised of three nationally recognized professionals: one designer, one architect, and one landscape architect. Submissions remained anonymous through the application process until the awards ceremony, which took place at the Piedmont Driving Club on September 18, 2021. Jill has made a truly lasting impact on our facility with her murals, Classic Vistas, in The Classic Center Theatre, and she is so deserving of a prestigious award such as this. Beth Bryant, the Director of The Classic Center Cultural Foundation said "The Cultural Foundation is honored to be a part of providing this award-winning artwork for the community. We hope all will take advantage of these incredible murals and stop by The Classic Center Theatre to enjoy them."

The Classic Vistas murals, housed in The Classic Center Theatre, showcase a multitude of local Athens spots hidden within the layers of paint. Popular spots such as the 40-Watt Club, the “Murmur” train trestle, Taylor Grady House, and a version of the statue of the Greek Goddess Athena all make an appearance somewhere in the murals. The Classic Center is grateful to showcase this carefully painted map of The Classic City.
