Six schools in the Jackson County School System have received the Heart Safe School designation from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The recognition was given to Maysville Elementary School, Heroes Elementary School, the Empower College & Career Center, East Jackson Middle School, and South Jackson Elementary School in July. North Jackson Elementary School earned the honor this week.
Previously, Jackson County High School was recognized in February, Gum Springs Elementary School in January, and West Jackson Middle School in July 2024. The distinction remains valid for two years. Other schools within the district are still awaiting confirmation after completing a detailed application process.
The Heart Safe School status is part of Project S.A.V.E., which acknowledges schools that are prepared to handle cardiac emergencies. Schools achieve this by implementing a sudden cardiac arrest emergency program and meeting specific criteria.
To qualify, each school must appoint a site coordinator who completes a checklist to ensure readiness for cardiac emergencies. Requirements include forming a response team of five to ten members trained to act during such events, maintaining CPR and AED certifications, establishing written procedures, regularly training staff, marking all AED locations clearly, and conducting emergency drills.
Dr. Philip Brown, Superintendent of Jackson County Schools, stated: “We are proud of our schools’ commitment to student safety and well-being. This recognition highlights our ongoing efforts to provide safe learning environments for everyone.”
