The Paul Taylor Dance Company is scheduled to perform in Athens on September 19, 2025, at The Classic Center Theatre. This event is presented by the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center as part of its UGA Presents series.

Founded in 1954 by choreographer Paul Taylor, the company has been a significant force in American dance for more than seven decades. Michael Novak, a former member of the company, now serves as artistic director and continues to uphold Taylor’s legacy while introducing new works that showcase the evolving nature of contemporary dance.

The performance program will include three pieces from the company’s repertory: “Company B” (1991), which contrasts upbeat 1940s music with themes from World War II; “Concertiana” (2017), Taylor’s final choreographed work set to music by Eric Ewazen; and “Esplanade” (1975), known for turning everyday movements into an exploration of emotion and motion.

The Paul Taylor Dance Company has appeared in over 600 cities across 66 countries and maintains an annual residency at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. Its performances are recognized for their athleticism and theatrical expression.

In addition to the main public performance, the company will also present a Piedmont Athens Regional Performance for Young People and lead a master class with University of Georgia dance students.

“Paul Taylor, one of the most accomplished artists this nation has ever produced, helped shape and define America’s homegrown art of modern dance from the earliest days of his career as a choreographer in 1954 until his death in 2018. Having performed with Martha Graham’s company for several years, Mr. Taylor uniquely bridged the legendary founders of modern dance — Isadora Duncan, Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn, Doris Humphrey, and Ms. Graham — and the dance makers of the 21st century with whom he later worked. Through his initiative at Lincoln Center begun in 2015 — Paul Taylor American Modern Dance — he presented great modern works of the past and outstanding works by today’s leading choreographers alongside his own vast repertoire. He also commissioned the next generation of dance makers to work with his renowned Company, thereby helping to ensure the future of the art form.”

UGA Presents is marking its 30th anniversary season with more than 40 events planned throughout the year. The season will conclude with a gala featuring cellist Yo-Yo Ma on February 1, 2026.

Tickets for the Paul Taylor Dance Company performance can be purchased through ClassicCenter.com.

Located in Athens, Georgia, The Classic Center serves as a multi-use venue hosting various events including concerts and conventions. Its recent expansion includes Akins Ford Arena, which increases its capacity for large-scale gatherings.
