On January 6, 2023, at about 11:45 p.m., officers with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department (ACCPD) were investigating a stolen vehicle in the 5000 block of Smokey Road when they encountered an individual armed with a firearm.  During the encounter, two ACCPD officers and the armed individual fired shots.  The officers were not injured.  However, the armed individual died as a result of his injuries.

As part of its standard operating procedure, ACCPD contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and requested a criminal investigation. ACCPD’s Office of Professional Standards has opened an administrative investigation, and the officers have been placed on administrative leave pending initial review of the incident.

This case has been turned over to the GBI. The GBI press release can be found at the following link: https://gbi.georgia.gov/…/gbi-investigates-officer
