Oconee County Elementary enrolled 12 African American students for 2024-25, a decline of 25% from the prior year, reports the Georgia Department of Education.
The school’s total enrollment reached 404 in the 2024-25 academic year. African American students accounted for 3% of the student population, making up the smallest demographic group at the school.
It operates within the Oconee County School District, which has its central office in Watkinsville.
Oconee County High School, among the district’s 11 schools, had the largest number of African American students for 2024-25, with 51 enrolled.
The National Center for Education Statistics reports that public schools across Georgia include roughly 36.4% Black, 35.9% white, 18.1% Hispanic, 4% Asian, 4.6% multiracial, 0.2% American Indian or Alaska Native, and 0.1% Pacific Islander students.
Chronic absenteeism continues to significantly impact Georgia schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing 10% or more of school days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. To address this, GaDOE introduced several statewide measures, such as a real-time attendance dashboard, outreach campaigns, and targeted guidance for high-need districts to promote daily attendance.
In 2025, state legislators approved a new law on school attendance policies prohibiting expulsion solely for absenteeism. The legislation also requires expanded reporting and works alongside alternative diploma pathways for students.
As of 2026, Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio was about 14:1, compared with the national average of 15:1.
