Chronic absenteeism continues to be a significant problem for Georgia schools after the pandemic. In 2024, 20.7% of students missed 10% or more school days, as reported by the Georgia Department of Education. To address this, GaDOE introduced new efforts statewide, unveiling a real-time attendance dashboard, launching a public campaign, and offering specialized support to high-need districts to encourage regular attendance.

By 2025, state lawmakers amended school attendance laws to prohibit expulsions solely because of absenteeism. The new legislation introduces updated reporting standards and expands diploma-earning opportunities through alternative programs.

Georgia’s student-to-teacher ratio averaged 14:1 as of 2026, exceeding the state’s own average and outperforming the national average of 15:1.
