The Jackson County School System has received a $20,000 Georgia Reads Community Award grant to support its literacy programs. The award was presented at the Georgia State Capitol during the Georgia Reads Day celebration.

The grant, provided by the Georgia Council on Literacy, recognizes school systems that have shown at least three years of collaborative work and measurable progress in literacy. This initiative aims to promote partnerships that help improve reading skills across communities.

Jackson County School System leaders have emphasized their ongoing commitment to advancing literacy for all students. Several years ago, the district launched Ferst Readers, a program that delivers books and educational resources monthly to families with children from birth to five years old.

As part of the recognition for receiving the Georgia Reads Community Award, JCSS will host Malcolm Mitchell, a children’s author and former University of Georgia football player who also won an NFL Super Bowl championship. Mitchell is scheduled to visit on March 11 to read with students and encourage them to develop a passion for reading.
