During the 2024-25 school year, Hilsman Middle School had 38 multiracial students enrolled, reflecting a 9.5% drop from the prior year, reports the Georgia Department of Education.
The school’s total enrollment for 2024-25 was 640 students. Multiracial students comprised 6% of Hilsman’s student population, representing the second-smallest demographic group at the school.
Hilsman Middle School is within the Clarke County School District, which is based in Athens.
With 93 multiracial students enrolled, Clarke Central High School had the district’s largest number of multiracial students in 2024-25 among its 21 schools.
Georgia public schools reported more than 1.7 million students enrolled, according to the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report. Enrollment peaked in elementary grades at 787,206 (45.9%), followed by middle schools with 388,733 (22.7%), and high schools with 539,092 (31.4%).
Chronic absenteeism has continued to pose a significant challenge for Georgia schools after the pandemic, as 20.7% of students missed at least 10% of instructional days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. To address the issue, GaDOE has launched a statewide strategy consisting of a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness effort, and customized support for districts with high needs to improve attendance rates.
In 2025, a new Georgia bill revised attendance laws to prohibit expulsion based solely on absenteeism. The updates also impose new requirements for reporting and are designed to work with programs that enable students to earn diplomas through alternative options.
By 2026, Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio stood at about 14:1, improving upon the nationwide average of 15:1.
