In the upcoming November 4, 2025, special election, Republican incumbent Tim Echols will face off against Democrat Alicia Johnson for the District 2 seat on the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC).
The Georgia Public Service Commission regulates utilities like AT&T and Georgia Power and oversees energy infrastructure decisions, rate hikes, and long-term planning. According to Cobb Voice, while PSC candidates must live in the district they seek to represent, all Georgians are eligible to vote in both district races.
In District 2, Echols is seeking reelection to the Georgia Public Service Commission. He faces a primary challenge from Lee Muns before a potential general election matchup with Johnson. The PSC has been at the center of debates over the future of natural gas, nuclear power, and renewable energy. Because commissioners are elected statewide, voters across Georgia—not just those in District 2—will ultimately decide whether Echols retains his seat or a Democrat wins it for the first time in years.
According to the Georgia PSC website, “the Georgia Public Service Commission is the last hope of many Georgia consumers in resolving their problems with utilities regulated by the Commission.”
The special election will be held on November 4th of this year. In-person early voting begins on October 14th and runs until October 31st.
