The Ébène Quartet will return to Athens for a concert featuring works by Beethoven and Ravel on April 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Ramsey Concert Hall, according to an announcement released April 3. The event is part of the UGA Presents season celebrating its 30th anniversary and is supported by the late Richard C. Owens.
The performance will include three major pieces from the string quartet repertoire. The program opens with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Quartet in G Major, Op. 18, No. 2, followed by Maurice Ravel’s Quartet in F Major, which highlights the composer’s unique style. After intermission, the ensemble will play Beethoven’s Quartet in C-sharp Minor, Op. 131.
The Ébène Quartet consists of violinists Pierre Colombet and Gabriel Le Magadure, violist Marie Chilemme (who will be replaced by Hélène Clément for this tour), and cellist Yuya Okamoto. The group has received international recognition for their performances that range from classical music to jazz and contemporary genres.
Founded in 1999, the quartet gained prominence after winning the ARD International Music Competition in 2004 and has since performed at major venues such as Carnegie Hall and Vienna Konzerthaus. Their project recording all of Beethoven’s string quartets across six continents marked their twentieth anniversary.
Audience members are invited to attend a free pre-performance talk led by Andrew Maxfield from 6:45-7:15 p.m. in Hodgson Concert Hall before the concert begins.
Tickets can be purchased online at pac.uga.edu or through the Performing Arts Center box office either by phone or in person during business hours; parking is free for attendees.
