Dr. Roop Dutta, a board-certified cardiac electrophysiologist, will join St. Mary’s Medical Group and Oconee Heart and Vascular Center (OHVC) on September 8, 2025. Dr. Dutta will work with Dr. Amit Shah to enhance the electrophysiology services offered by OHVC and St. Mary’s Hospital.

Electrophysiology focuses on diagnosing and treating abnormal heart rhythms by studying the electrical impulses of the heart. Electrophysiologists also implant devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators and provide ongoing care for patients who need them. The procedures are minimally invasive, using catheter technology to address heart rhythm disorders while reducing pain, blood loss, hospital stays, and recovery time.

Dr. Dutta recently completed his clinical cardiac electrophysiology fellowship at Boston University Brighton, affiliated with the Boston University School of Medicine. He earned his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Williams College in Massachusetts and received his medical degree from Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Rhode Island. His postgraduate training includes an internal medicine residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and a cardiovascular disease fellowship at Boston Medical Center Brighton, where he was Chief Fellow.

He holds certifications in cardiovascular disease, adult echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, and internal medicine. Dr. Dutta has experience in medical research with multiple publications including posters, presentations, journal articles, and book chapters.

Outside of his professional responsibilities, Dr. Dutta enjoys hiking, spending time outdoors, learning about history, and reading English literature.

Dr. Dutta will see patients at Oconee Heart and Vascular Center’s main office near Epps Bridge Crossing at 2470 Daniells Bridge Road in Athens. New patient appointments are available now; some insurance plans may require a physician referral for specialist visits or procedures. OHVC accepts most major insurance plans as well as Medicare as part of St. Mary’s Medical Group network. Appointments can be made by calling (706) 389-3440 or visiting www.stmarys-health.org.
