Chronic absenteeism persists in Georgia schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, the Georgia Department of Education said. To address this, the GaDOE launched a statewide initiative featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, a public information effort, and targeted support for high-need districts aimed at improving attendance.
In 2025, Georgia lawmakers updated attendance rules to prohibit expulsion solely for absenteeism. The legislation also introduced new reporting requirements and supports programs that provide alternative paths to a diploma.
As of 2026, Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio was roughly 14:1, lower than the national average of 15:1.
