The Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections has announced that the computation and canvassing of ballots for the December 9, 2025, Special Election will begin at 7:00 PM at 2555 Lexington Road, Athens, Georgia. The process will continue on December 10 at the Elections Department Office located at 155 E. Washington Street and will proceed until all ballots are counted.

According to state law, this process involves reconciling provisional ballots to ensure that every vote is counted and tabulated. Absentee ballots received each day as outlined by Georgia law are also included in the final tally.

Officials have stated that “the computation and canvassing process is open to the public.”

After polls close on election night, the superintendent of elections starts compiling and tabulating results by collecting memory cards from advance voting sites and polling locations, scanning absentee ballots, and generating reports detailing contest outcomes. The superintendent also prepares all documentation required for canvassing.

During the canvassing phase, results are compared with voter registration numbers and supporting documents to verify accuracy. Verified results are recorded on official forms before being submitted to the Georgia Secretary of State. The process concludes when the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections certifies the final election results.
