Athens-Clarke County Unified Government Manager Bob Cowell announced on May 18 the appointment of Charles Mason as the new Warden and Corrections Department Director, effective immediately. Mason has served as Deputy Warden since August 2015 and held interim warden roles in both 2024 and 2025, most recently serving as Interim Warden since February.

The appointment is significant for the Athens-Clarke County community, as it places an experienced leader at the helm of its corrections department. The department oversees facilities responsible for preparing returning residents for re-entry into society while maintaining public safety.

“Charles has provided steady leadership during several interim warden roles in the last few years and his deputy warden role for more than a decade,” said Cowell. “He has also continued to expand his knowledge and leadership skills through a variety of professional education and certification programs during his time here. With his strong qualifications and experience, Charles will serve the department, the residents under its care, and the entire Athens-Clarke County community exceptionally well in his new role.”

Before joining Athens-Clarke County, Mason worked at Muscogee County Prison in Columbus from 1997 to 2015. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal science and a Master of Public Administration from Columbus State University. His credentials include graduation from Georgia Law Enforcement Command College, Combined Deputy Warden’s Academy, multiple Georgia Peace Officer Standards & Training Council certifications, as well as instructor certifications in emergency medical procedures and defensive tactics.

“I’m honored and excited to be selected as the next Warden and Corrections Department Director,” said Mason. “Our focus is to ensure that all returning residents in our facilities are prepared mentally, emotionally, socially, and vocationally for re-entry into society. We continue to improve our education opportunities, work skills and experience, and behavioral programs to reduce the likelihood of recidivism while also upholding the safety of the community, staff, and residents in our care.”

The Corrections Department operates both a Correctional Institution for adult men sentenced by Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) courts and a Diversion Center serving work-release offenders or those transitioning back into society after completing GDC sentences.

Athens-Clarke County functions as a consolidated city-county government delivering municipal services such as parks management, facility oversight—including historic preservation efforts like those at Morton Theatre—and unified governance across Athens-Clarke County according to the official website.

Looking ahead, officials say that with this leadership transition they expect continued improvements within correctional programming focused on rehabilitation.
