For the 2024-25 school year, Auburn Elementary School recorded an enrollment of 253 white students—an 11.8% decline compared to the prior year, reports the Georgia Department of Education.
The school’s overall enrollment reached 618 students in 2024-25. White students represented 41% of total enrollment, forming the school’s largest student group.
The campus is part of the Barrow County School District, which is headquartered in Winder.
Within Barrow County School District’s 16 schools, Winder-Barrow High School documented the most white students for 2024-25, with 839 enrolled.
National Center for Education Statistics data show that in Georgia’s public schools, the student population was approximately 36.4% Black, 35.9% white, 18.1% Hispanic, 4% Asian, 4.6% multiracial, 0.2% American Indian or Alaska Native, and 0.1% Pacific Islander.
Chronic absenteeism has continued to challenge Georgia schools following the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, the Georgia Department of Education found. To address this, GaDOE started a statewide initiative introducing a real-time attendance tracker, a public outreach campaign, and targeted supports for districts with higher needs to improve daily participation.
Beginning in 2025, an updated state law prohibits expulsion solely for absenteeism, adds new attendance reporting rules, and aligns with alternative diploma programs for eligible students.
By 2026, Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio was about 14:1, which compares favorably to the national average of 15:1.
