Residents of Athens are invited to an open house to learn more about the downtown Core redevelopment project. The event will take place on Wednesday, October 29, from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at the Foundry at Hotel Abacus, located at 295 E. Dougherty Street.

Representatives from the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government (ACCGov), the Athens Downtown Development Authority (ADDA), and the private development company Core will be present to answer questions and provide details about the proposed redevelopment.

The Core project involves a public-private partnership focused on redeveloping property at 295 East Dougherty Street, including the current Hotel Abacus site and neighboring areas. Plans include land exchanges, infrastructure improvements, and construction of a new public parking deck with 425 spaces at Hoyt Street and North Avenue. The developer is set to finance major sewer upgrades and contribute over $15 million in payments related to the project, which includes funding for affordable housing initiatives and enhancements to park facilities.

For those seeking more information or background on the project—including its history, related issues, and details about the development agreement—resources are available at www.accgov.com/core. This website also provides information discussed during a recent Mayor and Commission Agenda Setting Session held on Tuesday, October 21.

“Staff from the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government (ACCGov), the Athens Downtown Development Authority (ADDA), and the private development company (Core) will be available to answer questions and provide further information about the proposed development.”

The community can access additional resources such as an agenda item on the development agreement for properties around 295 E. Dougherty Street as well as a flyer for the Core Project Drop-In Open House through links provided by ACCGov.
