The Athens Physical Therapy Firefly Trail Ticket to Ride cycling event will take place on March 28, celebrating the completion of 12 miles of the trail and raising funds to finish the remaining 27 miles. The event, now in its 15th year, will start from Athens, Winterville, and Union Point.

The event aims to support the ongoing development of the Firefly Trail, a planned 39-mile rail-trail that connects several communities. Cyclists can choose their starting point and route length, with options ranging from short rides on paved trails to longer gravel loops. E-bikes are permitted.

Dr. Chris Doerr, owner of Athens Physical Therapy, said, “We are passionate about the Firefly Trail because of the enormous health and economic benefits it will provide to our whole region. My wife, Stephanie, and I love to ride rail-trails when we travel. We hope our involvement sparks even more support and helps speed construction of this trail to serve the communities we love and call home.”

This year introduces a new feature: the inaugural Trailblazer 5K and Fun Run presented by Piedmont Athens Regional. These runs will be held at Dudley Park in Athens before the bike ride begins. The certified course is open to all ages and abilities.

Participants can enjoy food trucks at various locations along the route as well as discounts at Café Racer’s new location near Oak Street and Inglewood Avenue in Athens. Those over age 21 can receive a free pour at Athentic Brewery by showing their wristband or bib number.

Registration is available online or in person at Georgia Cycle Sport in Athens. Volunteers are also needed for the event. All proceeds benefit Firefly Trail Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to completing the multipurpose trail connecting Greene, Oglethorpe, and Athens-Clarke counties.
