The Athens Community Council on Aging (ACCA) announced on Mar. 24 that it is participating in the national March for Meals campaign and launching a refreshed Community Dining Program to support older adults in the Athens area.
March for Meals is a national initiative that brings attention to the importance of Meals on Wheels, which delivers nutrition, safety checks, and social connection to homebound seniors at risk of isolation. ACCA President and CEO Eve Anthony said, “Meals on Wheels is often the difference between a senior being able to remain safely at home or facing much more difficult circumstances. It’s not just about food—it’s about dignity, independence, and knowing someone cares.”
The demand for ACCA’s services remains high with hundreds served each year and 14 local seniors currently waiting for meals. To highlight the impact of its programs, ACCA invited community leaders such as Athens-Clarke County Mayor Kelly Girtz and Winterville Mayor Dodd Ferrell to participate in ride-alongs delivering meals directly to seniors. “These ride-alongs are powerful,” Anthony said. “They give our leaders and supporters a chance to see the impact up close—to meet the individuals we serve and understand why this work matters so much.”
This month also marks the launch of ACCA’s updated Community Dining Program, shifting from traditional congregate settings to partnerships with local restaurants including La Parilla, Em’s Kitchen, and Strickland’s Restaurant. The new model offers greater flexibility for older adults regarding where and when they dine while maintaining access to nutritious meals in welcoming spaces. Alonso Haro, General Manager at La Parilla Mexican Restaurant said, “We’re proud to be part of a community that takes care of its neighbors… Working with ACCA allows us to help create a welcoming place where seniors can enjoy a meal, connect with others, and feel like part of the community.”
Looking ahead, ACCA will launch its “End the Wait” campaign on April 6th aiming to raise $30,000 so every senior needing Meals on Wheels can receive service without delay. Anthony said: “No senior should have to wait for something as basic as a meal… This campaign is about our community coming together to make sure we can reach every older neighbor who needs us.”
