The Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste Department announced on April 17 that compost, garbage, recycling, and leaf and limb collections will be suspended on Wednesday, April 22, 2026 in recognition of the Earth Day holiday.
The temporary change affects both residential and commercial customers outside the downtown district. According to the department’s statement, Monday pickups will occur as usual on Monday; Tuesday pickups will remain on Tuesday; Wednesday routes will be collected on Thursday; and both Thursday and Friday routes will be serviced together on Friday. Residents are reminded to place their trash and recycling roll-carts at the curb by 7:00 AM on their designated pickup day. Normal service is set to resume starting Monday, April 27.
Customers located within the Downtown District who have commercial or residential service with the department will continue to receive collection according to their regular schedule.
The City of Athens operates as a consolidated city-county government extending its governance across Athens and Clarke County in Georgia according to the official website. The local government provides unified public services including management of parks, facilities such as the restored Morton Theatre, community programs, historic preservation efforts, and municipal services according to the official website.
Broader implications of this schedule adjustment highlight how municipal governments like Athens-Clarke County coordinate essential public services while observing significant dates such as Earth Day.
