The Athens-Clarke County Unified Government (ACCGov) is seeking public input on a proposed expansion of the North Oconee River Greenway Trail. The Leisure Services Department and Capital Projects Department are planning to extend the trail along Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway from North Avenue to 1st Street.

A public information open house will be held on Thursday, September 4 at the Lyndon House Arts Center, located at 211 Hoyt St., from 5:00-7:00 PM. Residents can attend at any time during these hours to speak with project staff and share their feedback on the proposed design.

In addition to the in-person event, information about the project and an online comment form are available through October 5 at www.accgov.com/leisureserviceslistens.

The planned expansion includes building a multi-use trail that is between 10 and 12 feet wide. It will run for approximately 0.7 miles along Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway, connecting from North Avenue to the intersection of 1st Street and East Broad Street near Dudley Park. The path will feature both concrete and boardwalk sections.

Funding for this section of trail comes from the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST) 2023 program’s Project #11: East Athens MLK Parkway Oconee River Greenway Trail, with around $2.5 million allocated for construction.

For further details or questions, residents can visit www.accgov.com/leisureserviceslistens or contact the ACCGov Leisure Services Department’s Park Planning Office at 706-613-3801.
