Want to plant a tree, but you aren’t sure where to start? Come learn all about tree planting from Athens area Master Gardener Liz Conroy at Athens-Clarke County Library on Saturday, March 25, at 11:00 am.

Conroy will cover “right tree, right place,” best practices when planting trees, and mis-takes she has made. She will also share basic tips on simple pruning and tree care.

Conroy has been a Master Gardener since 2010. She and her husband moved to Georgia from Maryland in 1986. She has written for many magazines, such as Georgia Backroads, Blue Ridge Country, Athena, Athens Magazine, Athens-Oconee Parent, and more. During those years, she also joined the Athens-Clarke County Community Tree Council and the Clarke Central High School PTSO. Now in retirement, Conroy hopes to carry on with her nature writing, tree planting and volunteering.

March 20-26 is the third annual celebration of Trees Are the Key Awareness Week, an initiative that focuses on the many benefits of trees established by The World Forest Organization, a UK charity.

The March 25 event is the first of the library’s All About Trees series this spring. On Saturday, April 29, Conroy will present a program about tree care in honor of Arbor Day. Athens-Clarke County UGA Extension Office Agent Laura Ney will discuss fruit trees in honor of National Love a Tree Day on Saturday, May 13.

This presentation is free and open to the public and will take place in the library’s Multi-purpose Room B. For more information, call the library at 706-613-3650 or visit athenslibrary.org. The Athens-Clarke County Library is located at 2025 Baxter Street, Athens.
