Many Athens-Clarke County government services and facilities will operate on altered schedules during the Christmas holiday period.
Animal Services’ Adoption Center and Field Services will be closed on Wednesday, December 24, and Thursday, December 25. Regular operations will resume on Friday, December 26. Emergency animal services, such as responses to animal bites or animals trapped inside homes, will remain available by calling 911 throughout the holiday period. The department’s Couch Crashers short-term fostering program runs from Friday, December 19 through Friday, January 2.
Leisure Services parks and facilities will also be closed on December 24 and 25. They are scheduled to reopen with regular hours on December 26.
Solid Waste collection for residential and commercial customers outside of downtown Athens-Clarke County will be suspended on December 24 and 25. During the week of the holiday:
– Monday and Tuesday collections will take place on Monday,
– Wednesday collection moves to Tuesday,
– Thursday and Friday collections occur on Friday.
Inside the downtown district, garbage, recycling, and composting services will be suspended only on Thursday, December 25; normal service resumes Friday.
Leaf & Limb collection is suspended for the week of December 22. The landfill and Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) are both closed December 24–25; CHaRM remains regularly closed Mondays, Thursdays, and Sundays. The Materials Recycling Facility is closed only on Thursday, December 25. Solid Waste administrative offices follow a similar closure schedule.
Athens Transit service is not available on either Wednesday or Thursday of Christmas week but returns to normal operations starting Friday.
All other general government offices—including City Hall, Courthouse buildings, Satula Avenue Building, and Dougherty Street Governmental Building—will also close for these two days before resuming standard hours.
